A guy from California wants the state to separate from the United States.
The California Secretary of State’s office, led by Shirley Weber, announced that Marcus Evans can start gathering papers to present the questions to voters.
“Should California break away from the United States and become its own country?” the question asks.
To get on the November 2028 ticket, Evans needs to gather at least 546,651 signatures from registered voters by July 22. If approved, this bill won’t lead to California becoming independent.
Instead, it would announce a “vote of no confidence in the United States” and show that the people of California want to become a separate country. This would happen without altering the state’s government or its ties with the U.S.
In addition, a 20-member commission would be formed to study whether California could govern itself and its viability as a nation.

Leaving the U.S. would need a change to the Constitution, and that would require the approval of two-thirds of the states.
The California law states that the state is a permanent part of the United States, regardless of any proposals.
The California Legislative Analyst’s Office says that the U.S. Constitution does not allow a state to leave the United States or to be an independent nation within the country.
