AUSTIN — Officers and emergency staff across Central Texas said they’ve been reacting to dozens of crashes since early Tuesday morning.
As snow and ice built up on the roads, it got thicker and made the surfaces slippery and unsafe.
Round Rock Police on X asked people to stay home. The department told KXAN that from 2 a.m. to just after 1 p.m. on Tuesday, they had attended to 21 calls for help from drivers and 35 accidents.
Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) reported that their officers attended to 16 accidents between midnight and 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
TxDOT cams also recorded major accidents. One video showed a large truck that crashed on Interstate 35 South and spilled fuel onto the road. The Mustang Ridge Police Department posted pictures of a rollover accident that caused several injuries.
KXAN got several videos that show how the slippery road affected cars. One video showed a truck’s wheels spinning on the ice.
By Tuesday afternoon, the sun shone in some places, causing the snow to melt. Officials advise everyone to be careful.
“Even though it seems like most of the ice is melted or gone, the truth is, we can’t be sure,” said ATCEMS Captain Christa Stedman. “Tonight, there will be moisture on the roads, and there is a chance that it could freeze again.”
