As the Cold Weather Rule comes to an end, Evergy customers have less than a week remaining to enroll in the state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).
Clients must submit their assistance application to the Kansas Department of Children and Families by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 31.
Until Monday, anyone in need of assistance with the application procedure can go to their local DCF office or aid agency.
Customers are advised to bring the following items to complete the application:
- Each family member’s Social Security number
- All household members who are 18 years of age or older must provide proof of income.
- Lease copy (only if Section 8)
- Utility bills (gas, electric, propane, wood, etc.) in copy form
A percentage of the home energy expenses for qualified households can be covered by the federally financed LIEAP program.

Customers of Kansas Corporation Commission-regulated utility businesses are only shielded from losing their electricity after nonpayment if temperatures are predicted to be below 35 degrees, according to the rule.
Even if a prior payment plan was breached, utility companies must provide a 12-month payment plan upon request while the rule is in force.
A disconnection could occur on March 31 if agreements are not made or if a prearranged payment plan is not followed.
Severe Weather Expected This Weekend, Affecting 22 States Starting Sunday
Depending on the utility company’s regulation, a client may be required to pay past-due charges in full if they reconnect their energy after March 31.
Consumers who are having financial issues are encouraged to learn more about local utility assistance programs and to remain in touch by calling 800-662-0027 or 785-271-3140 to speak with your utility company or the KCC Consumer Protection Office.
Although municipal and cooperative utilities are not subject to KCC regulation, some of them do provide a cold-weather payment plan. HERE is a list of utilities that are subject to KCC regulation.
