According to authorities, a Florida man has confessed to killing another man in 1997, resolving a cold case that dates back more than 25 years.
According to a news release issued Monday by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Stephen Edenfield was discovered battered and stabbed inside his Tampa, Florida, condo on February 1, 1997.
On “Unfinished Business,” a podcast produced by the sheriff’s office, cold case investigator Dan Bendig stated that Edenfield had gone out twice the night before he was discovered dead.
According to Bendig, he had first gone out to dinner with his sister and brother. He left the complex once more before midnight and came back at 12:50 a.m. on February 1.
According to Bendig, Edenfield had forgotten his remote control to open the complex gate, so he chatted to a security guard for a short while. Edenfield informed the security officer that he was accompanied by the driver of the vehicle behind him.
According to Bendig, the security officer allowed both vehicles to enter the property but was unable to get a clear view of the second vehicle’s driver.
Within an hour of Edenfield’s return home, Bendig claimed she heard “violence in the house” and “calls for help” from neighbors. Police were informed by three neighbors that they had heard “some sort of disturbance.”
The security officer was doing rounds at the property at around two in the morning. According to Bendig, he observed a “dark shadow” close to Edenfield’s flat and knew it was a person, but he was unable to get a clear view of the person’s face.
The following day, Edenfield’s brother discovered him dead in his apartment.
No marks of forced entry were found, but there was evidence of a violent struggle and the bloody writing of the word “Greed” on the wall of Edenfield’s bedroom. No one was arrested as a result of an initial investigation.
In 2022, the case was restarted by the Cold Case Unit of the sheriff’s office. The unit collaborated with the forensic genetic genealogy firm Othram Labs.
According to Othram Labs, it created a thorough DNA profile for an unidentified suspect using forensic data from the original inquiry. According to the business, a forensic search was conducted using that profile to uncover fresh investigative leads.
According to the sheriff’s office, a forensic search conducted in 2024 revealed that the DNA profile was also connected to an unresolved Illinois sexual assault case from 2005. One of the suspects in the case was Brandon Glih
