Dog on the Run Caught in New Orleans Following a Rise to National Stardom for Its Adventures

NEW ORLEANS — A scruffy rescue dog from New Orleans, known for his remarkable ability to dodge capture for months despite attempts with nets and tranquilizer rifles, has finally been apprehended and brought back to a home environment on Tuesday.

A 17-pound mutt named Scrim has captured the hearts of Louisiana residents. After escaping from his adopted family in April, he spent months wandering the city before finally being caught and returned home. In October, he made a dramatic leap from a second-story window, an event captured on video that quickly gained traction online.

Throughout his time evading capture, Scrim endured hurricane and frigid blizzard conditions. A group of dedicated volunteers monitored his activities across 57 square miles (148 square kilometers) by utilizing wildlife surveillance cameras and a collaboratively created map of sightings.

Michelle Cheramie, the owner of the animal rescue nonprofit Zeus’ Rescues, reported that the famous fugitive was finally caught in a cat trap after her team’s dedicated efforts to locate Scrim. Cheramie, once an information technology expert, has dedicated her life to animal care after losing her home in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She believes she was “born to rescue.”

On Tuesday, a joyful Cheramie cradled Scrim in her arms following a refreshing bath. The dog seemed relaxed, and a veterinarian determined he was in good health. Last year, while on the run for the first time, Scrim endured lacerations and was discovered with what seemed to be small bullets embedded in him.

“He faced incredible challenges.” His safety was my priority. Cheramie stated, “He is not a wild dog.” “I plan to ensure he has a safe environment with opportunities for long walks, access to veterinary care, and a space where he can feel secure from loud, frightening sounds.”

Individuals who dedicated their evenings to scouring the city for Scrim gradually made their way to Cheramie’s home, eager for the opportunity to cuddle and interact with the dog. They exchanged tales of their extensive yet unproductive search while Scrim lounged comfortably under blankets on the couch.

Cheramie is leaving nothing to chance. She has meticulously secured all the doors and windows in her home as she prepares to take Scrim to his new permanent family, whose identity she chose not to disclose. Scrim is now equipped with a new GPS collar and an AirTag tracking device to ensure he can be located if he wanders off again.

Cheramie is set to savor the moments with Scrim before he becomes part of the family.

“Tonight, he’ll be sleeping in bed with me, and it’s going to be absolutely incredible,” Cheramie expressed. “Having him close feels incredible.” It’s truly everything I’ve ever dreamed of.
