A puppy was abandoned in a garbage on a chilly New Jersey night, leaving it to fend for itself.

Maintenance workers at the Glenwood Apartments in Old Bridge, New Jersey, discovered a small white puppy in a garbage bin shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. According to the Old Bridge Township Police Department, the dog was abandoned at 10 p.m. the previous night.

Surveillance footage from Monday night shows a young man holding the white puppy in his arms before placing it inside the dumpster. The National Weather Service reported that temperatures in Old Bridge ranged between 10 and 13 degrees that night.

“When the maintenance worker passed by, he popped his head out of the dumpster. “They took him because no one else was present,” Officer Michael Shannon told WABC.

In a Facebook post, police requested apartment complex tenants to look for and provide any pertinent security footage in the hopes of finding the individual who abandoned the dog.

“Everyone was cooperating and willing to help us,” Detective Jessica Nierodzik told the publication. “Glenwood Management helped us get everything we needed.”

Additional video evidence allowed police to identify the individual as a 26-year-old township resident, whose identity has not been revealed. He faces charges of animal neglect and mistreatment, according to Newsbreak.

According to NJ.com, the dog, a 2-year-old Bichon Frisé named Scotty, is in good health and is being cared for and protected by the Old Bridge Animal Shelter. In a Jan. 22 Facebook post, the shelter stated that they had received “phone calls, emails, and messages” concerning Scotty, but that he is “not currently available for adoption or foster.”

“We really appreciate your passion for giving him a loving home. “He is in the care of our veterinarian and is awaiting grooming,” they added.
