A 72-year-old woman and her dog were killed in a terrible two-vehicle collision on Friday night on the 405 Freeway in West Los Angeles. Three other people were hospitalized, two of them in severe condition.
The California Highway Patrol reported the event at approximately 6:42 p.m. It occurred in the freeway’s northbound lanes close to Wilshire Boulevard.
The identity of the 72-year-old woman who died in the tragedy has not been made public, but it involved a collision between two automobiles.
Although authorities confirmed that the dog also perished in the collision, they did not immediately disclose the breed or identify of the canine involved.
Aside from the deaths, another dog was also a part of the tragedy but was fortunate enough to escape.
Concerns for the welfare of the stray dog were raised after it was last saw close to the freeway’s northbound lanes and was still missing as of the evening.
When the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) crews arrived at the scene of the incident, they discovered a chaotic situation. Three people were identified as requiring medical care.
A woman in her 80s was among the patients who needed to be freed from a car by LAFD firefighters.
A 60-year-old woman and a 66-year-old male were the other two patients in the collision.
The 60-year-old lady was described as being in fair health, while the 80-year-old woman and the 66-year-old man were said to be in critical condition.
Along with the terrible deaths and severe injuries, the collision seriously disrupted traffic.
Numerous lanes, particularly the number 5 and 6 lanes, on the northbound side of the 405 Freeway were closed as a result of the accident.
While rescue personnel attempted to clear the debris and tend to the injured, these roads were blocked for a number of hours.
Caltrans said around 8:40 p.m. that the closures would likely remain for three hours and advised drivers to drive carefully and, if feasible, take other routes.
Throughout the evening, Caltrans gave timely updates despite the difficulties in controlling the crash site and tending to the injured.
All lanes were reopened by 10:24 p.m., at which point traffic was permitted to resume. Nonetheless, the crash had an emotional impact on the local community, affecting both commuters and residents.
