A mother from Australia said that she tried to save her blind son from the wildfires in the Los Angeles area but couldn’t because there wasn’t enough water.
Shelley Sykes, a businesswoman who makes TV shows, told Australian media that she was fighting hard to save her 32-year-old son Rory Sykes, who has cerebral palsy.
At least 24 people have died in Los Angeles because of wildfires that were spread by wind and destroyed houses and communities.
Malibu is a beach city in Los Angeles County. Sykes said on social media that she and her son lived on a 17-acre home there.
She said that Rory Sykes, who was on the British TV show “Kiddy Kapers” in the 1990s, had his own cottage on the land.
Sykes said she couldn’t leave her son on the farm by himself.
“Because it was so stuffy, I stayed in the main house with my two peacocks in a bathroom.” Trying to stay wet while sitting on the floor with a bottle of water.”
Ashes were seen on the roof of her son’s house, and Sykes tried to put them out with a hose, but “there was no water coming out.”
Then she drove to the closest fire station to ask for help, but they also didn’t have water.
“There was nothing there”
During the first efforts to put out the fires, some Los Angeles areas’ water hydrants ran dry, making a lot of people angry.
When the fire department took Sykes back to her home, she saw that the house was “just black ash.”
“There was nothing there,” she told Nine.
Sykes was very sad about her son’s death because they both had the same birthday.
“I’m so upset I can’t believe it right now.” I’m having trouble breathing.”
Sykes said that fire officials said he died from breathing in too much carbon monoxide.
This mother was very upset because she couldn’t get her son out of harm’s way.
“My arm is broken.” I was unable to lift him. At a different time, she told Australia’s Channel 10: “I couldn’t move him.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia said it knew that an Australian man had died and was working closely with the officials in the area.
The department said it was helping the man’s family with consular matters but couldn’t say anything else because of “privacy obligations.”
The Associated Press said that those who died in the fires were 67-year-old cripple Anthony Mitchell and his son Justin, who has cerebral palsy. Another man who died in the fire was found holding a yard hose, and an 82-year-old man died in his bed.
