NEW YORK, ALBANY — A plan that Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Friday would let all of New York’s students get free breakfast and lunch at school.
If lawmakers in the state agree to it, Hochul said in a news release, the plan would cover more than 2.7 million kids in the state, no matter how much money they make.
He said, “The research is clear: good food in the lunchroom leads to good grades in the classroom.” “I want to make sure that all New York students get free school meals. This will give kids the food they need and give parents more money.”
New York students can already get free or cheap school meals through a government program that is based on how much money their family makes. Her office said that Hochul’s plan would give free meals to about 300,000 more kids in New York by getting rid of any income limits.
It is possible for all students in at least eight states to get free school food.
At a news meeting on Friday, the governor will talk about the plan in more detail. As she plans her goals for the state’s legislative session, she has been announcing a number of economic plans that are meant to lower the high cost of living in the state.
