Incredible Rescue: Florida Woman Pries Open 6-Foot Alligator’s Jaws to Save Dog

When a 6-and-a-half-foot alligator snatched her dog Kona’s head in its mouth as they were out for an evening stroll in Florida, a lady put her life in danger to save her beloved pet.

“Suddenly, I saw the eyes. I saw it turning itself around so I started pulling her right away, ‘Kona, let’s go,’ but she’s a really strong dog,” Kim Spencer said beside her on her couch.

The alligator had Kona’s entire head in its mouth in a matter of seconds.

“She’s facing it, it’s facing her, and it suddenly jumped at her and got her, so she was in all the way up to here, like her whole head in its mouth,” Spencer recalled.

At that point, she claimed, she “stopped thinking and just dove on it.”

“Jumped on it, straddled it, as ladylike as that is,” she quipped, “and was trying to pry its jaws open.”

According to Spencer, the alligator’s back was to her, and because everything happened so quickly, she can’t recall every detail.

“We just got lucky because it ran. Just as quickly as it ran after us it went right back in the water and I got up and we were out of there,” she stated.

After the event, Spencer and Kona both need stitches; nonetheless, they are both doing well, albeit Spencer’s hands are still bandaged and Kona is wearing a cone over her head.

“We’re empty nesters, she’s my baby, so I wasn’t ready to take on that mindset that she’s an animal versus a human,” Spencer stated.

Spencer cautioned others that someone else could “easily” experience the same thing.

“You might not be that lucky to be able to get your child or your pet. Many people say they’re more afraid of us than we are of them. Clearly not the case.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states that although there are rarely serious injuries from alligators in Florida, there is always a “potential for conflict,” noting that an increase in the number of people living near the water’s edge “may result in more frequent alligator-human interactions, and a greater potential for conflict.”

The commission suggests that you stay away from alligators, never feed them, and keep your dogs on leashes and out of the water.
