Famous comedian and ex-TV show Jay Leno talks about how he helped serve hot meals to firefighters in California, calling them “the best fire department in the world.”
Since the Los Angeles County wildfires started, many critics have blamed California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, and other officials for not being ready to handle the situation.
“Let me tell you: These guys really can eat.” They all look like the man in a Brawny paper towel commercial. Leno mentioned on “The Will Cain Show” that these strong men distributed 700 pounds of ribs and 400 pounds of chicken.
Leno spoke about how he had a “great five days” assisting first responders in Los Angeles. He noted that they were able to eat and manage fire responses efficiently, almost like a “military operation.”
“I was at Bagram Air Force Base.” It reminded me of that — airplanes organized with guys on the ground, guys on the ground that got big maps laid out of where they think the fire is going to go,” he said.
“You give them a rib, they eat it, then they look at the map and talk to the helicopter.” Leno said, “It really is a military operation.”
Leno praised the first rescuers for not playing the blame game about who caused the fires. He praised them for dealing with the fires and ensuring people’s safety.
“What’s the best part about it?” No blaming others. These are firemen and women,” Leno said, explaining how they were focused on things like, “How can we put this out?” and, “What do we need to do?”
Leno mentioned that, even when not officially speaking, none of the firemen were blaming anyone.
“It was all about figuring out how to put out this fire.” Leno said that the mood was positive.
When Leno delivered hot meals to first responders, he brought a 1914 fire truck from Burbank, California, to lift their spirits.
“I worried that having the fire engine might seem like I’m trying to show off.” But one of the chiefs said this was such a great morale booster to see this almost 100-year-old fire engine roll in, it’s all bright and shiny in the middle of all this dirt and all this gray,” Leno said.
“So it turned out to be a win-win all the way around,” he said. “I had a great experience.” “I really liked it.”z
