Kansas Families Can Get Help with Summer Groceries Through New Assistance Program

Applications are now being accepted for SUN Bucks, a program that helps families with school-aged children with groceries during the summer, according to a formal announcement from the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF).

On January 27, 2024, the application period for this summer’s program commenced.

To ensure that kids continue to receive the nutrition they require, SUN Bucks, formerly known as Summer EBT, provides a one-time benefit of $120 to assist families with the cost of groceries during the summer months.

This benefit is exclusively available to Kansas-based children aged 7 to 17.

Each household’s appropriate grocery aid is determined by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Thrifty Food Plan, which also determines the amount of money available through the SUN Bucks program.

The purpose of this program is to assist families who might find it difficult to pay for food throughout the summer, especially when kids aren’t getting school lunches anymore.

“Children and teenagers need consistent access to healthy foods to grow and thrive, and summer is a time when many of them lose access to the healthy meals they receive at school,” DCF Secretary Laura Howard stated. “SUN Bucks can help fill the gap by providing families a small boost with helping to put nutritious food on their tables.”

SUN Bucks are available to Kansas households with children aged 7–17 who have been enrolled in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) or Food Assistance since July 2024.

Additionally, students who have been granted free or reduced-price lunches since July 2024 and are currently enrolled in a Kansas school are also eligible. Children under the DCF secretary’s care may also be eligible.

The DCF has made extra information available on its website for anybody seeking more detailed eligibility information.

For SUN Bucks, the application process is simple. While some families will be eligible for the benefit without having to apply, others will. Families who are accepted will begin benefits in April 2025.

Families who must apply can use the DCF-designated portal to complete the application procedure online.

The advantages offered by SUN Bucks will lessen the financial strain that many families experience when their kids are home from school and school lunch programs are no longer offering meals.

This program is a component of Kansas’ continuous endeavors to assist families with children, particularly those who are struggling financially.

SUN Bucks makes sure that families can buy wholesome food for their kids during summer vacation by providing this short-term aid.

This program is a valuable resource to help make summer easier for Kansas families that need grocery assistance. Families that fit the requirements are urged to apply as soon as possible to guarantee they get the help they require.
