WICHITA, Kan. – The Kansas Senate’s new committee on government efficiency (COGE) shut down a state website on Thursday.
The lawmakers created COGE to review state government procedures and find ways to save money. People in Kansas can share their suggestions for a better government using an online form. The form started on January 31, and in one week, 600 replies were received. However, as soon as people learned about the form, so many tried to share their thoughts that the website crashed.
On Thursday, Republican Senator Michael Murphy, the vice-chair of COGE, comforted the people of Kansas. He said he won’t make major changes to the government right away. Murphy said they will use reports to recommend ways to save money to the lawmakers.
Murphy said that President Donald Trump’s plan to cut programs and staff will not take place in Kansas.
Murphy said, “In most cases, we can only offer a recommendation.” “We can’t just say it’s finished and tell everyone to leave.”
Murphy said his main goal is to lower taxes and prepare the State for a potential budget shortage in the future.
