Late Congressman’s Daughter Announces Run for His Seat: ‘Building Something Powerful’

In the next special election for the firmly Democratic district, the daughter of the late Representative Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., will seek her father’s seat.

On Monday, Pima County Supervisor Adelita Grijalva declared her candidacy for Arizona’s Seventh Congressional District, fulfilling her pledge to make her choice public following her father’s passing.

Her launch video, which she shared on X, stated that she is the daughter of “a man who spent his life fighting for justice, equity, and dignity for the most vulnerable communities.”

“From working as a vaquero to serving the people in the halls of Congress in a single generation. That’s the promise of this country, and that’s the legacy that’s helped shape me,” she continued. “This is the America that I want to raise my three beautiful children in. But today, that idea of America is under a serious threat,” the Democrat added, saying that President Donald Trump, Elon Musk and a “gang of billionaires” are taking aim at the “most sacred rights” in the country.

Within the day, Grijalva had accumulated enough signatures to qualify for the Democratic primary ballot. September 23 is the date of the general election, whereas July 15 is the date of the primary.

In a video released soon after her campaign start, she stated, “We have gathered enough signatures to be on the ballot in less than five hours since launching our campaign.”

According to the Secretary of State’s office, Democrats must have a minimum of 798 certified signatures and a maximum of 31,906 signatures to be included on the ballot in the contest.

Following a fight with lung cancer, the Democratic lawmaker passed away last month. Daniel Hernandez, a former state representative who reportedly boasted of having over $200,000 in campaign funds, will be Grijalva’s opponent.

“WOW!!! We just hit $200,000 raised since we launched on Monday. I’m BLOWN AWAY by the support—and ready to get to work. We’re building something powerful in Arizona. Let’s keep it going!!!!!!!” Hernandez made a post last week.

Adrian Fontes, the secretary of state, considered running for the position but ultimately opted against it, stating that he would instead seek reelection.

“I will continue to defend America as Arizona’s Secretary of State,” Fontes stated in a statement on March 26.

The district itself covers a large portion of Grand Canyon State’s southern border.
