PORTLAND, Oregon – Today, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a memo to federal prosecutors to look into state and local officials blocking the enforcement of President Trump’s new immigration rules.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said this uses the Department of Justice for political purposes.
“I want to focus on how the federal Department of Justice will proceed with the memorandum,” Rayfield said. “We’ve read it, and I have some legal questions about whether it will work. I want to know how the department plans to enforce it in the future.”
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez is also asking how this order was carried out.
“I don’t think it will be used correctly here, and we will oppose that.” “Our local and state laws are very clear,” Vasquez said.
He said our local leaders will keep handling immigration the same way they have since the 1980s – by not getting involved.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day said, “If someone has a warrant just for being in the country without permission, that will be dealt with by federal authorities. We will not be enforcing that.”
In Oregon, local organizations cannot follow federal immigration rules unless a judge says they can. Otherwise, the cops won’t cooperate with ICE or inquire about someone’s citizenship status.
“It’s unique because we’re not even a part of this discussion.” “Most members of the Portland Police Bureau are following state law,” said Day.
Rayfield is concentrating on a case he joined with 21 other state Attorneys General, which is contesting Trump’s order to end birthright citizenship.
“He took action merely with the swipe of the pen to challenge the Constitution,” he said. “We are here and have a plan to protect everyone in Oregon and our values.”
