Macy’s to Lay Off 280 Employees Amid Closure of Four Northern California Stores

Nearly 280 people will lose their jobs because four Macy’s shops in Northern California are closing permanently.

Last week, the store said that it would be closing the stores because it wants to focus on sites that make more money.

On January 9, Macy’s sent out Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notes to the stores that would be closing. These notices told people how many jobs they would lose because the stores would close.

94 people will lose their jobs when the Macy’s at NewPark Mall in Newark, Alameda County, shut down. The Macy’s store in Corte Madera in Marin County will close, putting 53 people out of work.

Also, two stores in Sacramento County will close. The Macy’s at 414 K St. in Sacramento will let go of 71 workers, and the Sunrise Mall store in Citrus Heights will do the same, hurting 61 workers.

This is part of Macy’s larger plan to close dozens of shops across the country that aren’t doing well. Because sales have been better there, the company wants to put more of its efforts there.

“It’s never easy to close a store,” said Tony Spring, CEO of Macy’s Inc. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing Macy’s stores that aren’t making money so we can put our resources and investments where they will make the most difference in our future stores.”

The choice to close these stores shows how shopping habits are changing, with more people preferring online shopping and smaller stores. Macy’s said it is responding by changing its store plan to focus on areas that fit with these trends.

Before closing its stores in Northern California, Macy’s closed several stores in the Bay Area. In March 2024, it closed its store in the Bayfair Center in San Leandro.

The company’s main store in Union Square in San Francisco will also be closing, but it will stay open until a buyer is found for the 700,000-square-foot building.
