A product that may be dangerous for at least 30 million Americans is being recalled by one of the most well-known food manufacturers in the country.
According to Boston Children’s Hospital, 2% of American children and the same percentage of adults have a more severe milk allergy, while between 30 and 50 million Americans have a milk sensitivity.
In less severe situations, a milk allergy may cause digestive distress; in more significant cases, it may cause anaphylaxis or, in the worst circumstances, death.
According to reports on Wednesday night, Frito-Lay is recalling over 1,000 packages of Tostitos because of this.
“A limited number of 13 oz. bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips are being recalled as they could include nacho cheese tortilla chips, and therefore may contain an undeclared milk allergen,” the parent company PepsiCo said on their website when they announced the recall at approximately 4 p.m. Eastern. Less than 1,300 bags might have been affected, according to the statement.
PepsiCo claims that the products were sold as far back as March 7 through digital channels (like Walmart.com and Amazon) and in retail establishments in the following states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. However, specific retailers to which the product was shipped are not mentioned.
PepsiCo has adopted a less strict stance by declaring that “unless a consumer has a dairy allergy or sensitivity to milk, this product is safe to consume.”
Thousands of Coca-Cola Cans Recalled After Contamination Concerns Arise
Normally, recalls provide broad recommendations that consumers should discard the product.
Although the FDA doesn’t seem to have released any information regarding the Tostitos recall at the time of publication, any food allergen that is not stated is frequently given the highest risk classification by the FDA due to the possibility of a major reaction or death.
For more identifying information, PepsiCo recommends Tostitos customers to the Frito-Lay “Contact Us” page; however, users may find the navigation path unclear.
It’s likely that the problem slithered into your buy if you detect a cheesy flavor in that package of plain-flavored chips.
