Man Fatally Shot by Officer After Firing at Police During Fort Worth Standoff Identified

The man fatally shot by police during a standoff at a home in northwest Fort Worth on January 30 has been named as 35-year-old Nicholas Scott Sides.

The police say that Sides shot several times at Lake Worth cops during a traffic stop at around 4:15 p.m. and then drove off quickly. A chase followed, and the suspect stopped in the driveway of a house in Sansom Park and fired at officers again before continuing the chase into Fort Worth, officials said.

Sides locked himself in a house on Skyline Drive in the 1700 block. The SWAT team and Crisis Intervention Team from the Fort Worth Police Department went to a home around 5 p.m., according to the 911 call records.

Investigators think that the house on Skyline Drive where Sides went is a relative’s home. Police said that a woman he allowed to leave the house during the situation is thought to be his mother. The address is given on the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s webpage as Sides’ home.

The battle went on for a few hours. During that time, Sides shot off fireworks from inside the house. A helicopter from WFAA-TV, a media partner of Star-Telegram, recorded video of the fireworks going off on the yard.

Officers attempted to talk with Sides and calm the situation, said Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes at a news conference soon after the killing.

Sides came out of the house and pointed a gun at his head, according to the cops. He shot at the cops while they begged him to drop the gun, according to Noakes and Lake Worth police Chief J.T. Manoushagian at the press conference. A SWAT cop in Fort Worth shot Sides in the body after he fired his weapon.

Sides received medical help at the location and was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital. The medical examiner’s website reported that he was declared dead just before 9 p.m. The decision on how Sides died is still waiting for the results of an autopsy.

No officers were hurt in the event. When asked why he believed Sides tried to escape from the police, Manoushagian explained that the suspect was on federal probation and threw things that might be illegal out of his car while being chased.

The police departments in Fort Worth and Lake Worth will share 911 call audio and body-camera videos of the killing at a news conference on Thursday morning, February 6.
