When Charlie, the Sinclair family’s 10-month-old infant, heard for the first time in her life, it was a moment of delight that the family had been waiting for and would never forget.
Tyler Sinclair, dad, stated, “Oh man, it was almost like a weight was lifted off my heart, not my shoulders.”
Usher syndrome is present from birth
Charlie was born deaf and has a genetic disease called Usher syndrome, which will eventually lead to eyesight loss as well.
“Ultimately it results in gradual hearing loss. Dr. Divya Chari of UMass Memorial Medical Center said, “In some kids, like Charlie, they are born with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss as well as progressive vision loss.”
However, Charlie is now able to hear because of cochlear implants, which are miniature electrical devices that were surgically implanted in her at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
The operation is life-changing for mom and dad. “To be aware that she is able to hear and comprehend sounds such as birds chirping and to have the opportunity to experience that.” Tyler Sinclair said, “And knowing that she’s going to go blind, I wanted her to really experience everything she could.”
Charlie was really robbed of the sense of hearing. Dr. Chari stated that she was not experiencing any auditory sensations. “The first time she heard her father’s voice was when those cochlear implants were turned on for the first time,” she said. That was something she had never heard before.

Charlie is making remarkable strides
The family believes that Charlie is making tremendous improvement, and it’s just been a week.
The surgery is also assisting her in improving her cognitive skills and her equilibrium. Mom Erin Sinclair stated, “She can hear, crawl, and sit up by herself.”
The family says that Charlie is full of spunk and vitality, but she will still require a lot of extra services. They are gathering money online to aid with her growth and listening skills.
Dr. Chari stated, “This is especially important for someone like Charlie because when she loses her vision in the future, it will be essential for her to have another sense, such as hearing.”
