MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A 27-year-old Miami-Dade County mother is facing charges for allegedly biting her 8-year-old daughter while out on bond for a previous violent crime.
Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Office (M-DCSO) deputies responded to the suspected child abuse incident on Saturday at a homeless shelter located at 28205 SW 124 Court.
According to records, M-DCSO correctional deputies booked Josephine Garcia just after midnight on Sunday, and she appeared in court approximately two hours later. A public defender informed Miami-Dade County Circuit Judge Charlie Johnson that Garcia has a 6-month-old child she hopes to return to.
Garcia was previously arrested by M-DCSO deputies for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on February 2. In 2018, Miami police arrested her for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, but the charges were later dropped by prosecutors within a month.
Circuit Judge Cristina Miranda is overseeing Garcia’s current pending cases, which include orders for her to stay away from the alleged victims.
On Sunday, Judge Johnson set Garcia’s bond for the child abuse case at $3,000. She remained incarcerated at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday afternoon.
