More Than 70,000 People in Michigan Asked to Avoid Travel Due to Weekend Conditions

Around 75,000 people have been advised not to travel this weekend by Michigan National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists due to an impending ice storm.

This weekend, the Great Lakes region will see a lot of snow, according to a NWS forecast. The late winter storm passed over Michigan.

In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, several alerts pertaining to winter weather were issued. These consist of a winter storm watch, an ice storm warning, and a winter weather advisory.

An ice storm warning was issued Thursday afternoon by the NWS office located in Marquette, Michigan. Starting at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, the warning will be in effect until 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Approximately 75,000 people live in Baraga County and Marquette County, where the warning was issued, according to census statistics. The warning area includes the cities of Marquette, Gwinn, and L’Anse.

The storm will strike the Upper Peninsula in two rounds, according to NWS lead meteorologist Tara Dudzik, who works at the Marquette office.

With the ice buildup, the first will arrive Thursday evening or early Friday morning. The second will deliver heavy, wet snow during the weekend.

It is anticipated that the ice buildup would cause power outages and damage to trees. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” according to forecast office meteorologists in Marquette, and “travel is strongly discouraged.”

Up to a quarter inch of ice might form during the storm. From Saturday night into Sunday, there is a chance of up to five inches of wet snowfall.

From eastern Montana, the winter weather advisories cover North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and Vermont. Maine and New Hampshire have issued winter storm watches.

Dudzik stated: “This isn’t completely abnormal. It’s winter to spring transition where the temperatures are kind of all over the place, so we are going to get every type of precipitation type with it.”

NWS Marquette stated in a post on X: “We continue to monitor upcoming winter weather, beginning Friday as a rain/freezing rain mix. The heaviest ice totals are expected Friday night. A brief lull Saturday will be followed by another round of wintry precip Saturday night into Sunday.”

Before the storm system comes on Saturday, NWS Marquette cautioned that the alerts could become severe enough to warrant a winter storm warning. They advised local residents to heed local forecasts.
