Governor Gavin Newsom might face another recall soon.
Saving California, a new group created late last year, has said it plans to deliver official recall papers to Governor Newsom. They criticize him for high taxes, a higher cost of living, poor emergency reactions, and a shrinking population.
“Governor Newsom’s time in office has made it very hard for regular people to live in California. Bad policies have raised living costs, crime rates, drug use, and homelessness. They have also made it tougher for small businesses and communities while lowering our education and professional standards. We’ve lost billions of taxpayer dollars on failed projects and our public services have suffered,” said Randy Economy, the group’s founder, in a statement.
This will be the eighth move to recall Newsom since he was elected. Only one attempt got onto the statewide ballot. This proposal was introduced in 2021 as a reaction to his strict public health measures during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Newsom successfully defeated the recall election. He presented it as a choice between his views and those of his opponent, conservative talk-show host Larry Elder, highlighting the importance of progressive ideals and the dangers of “Trumpism.”
In a TV interview, Economy said this recall effort is different from previous ones because Californians have been directly affected by Newsom’s policies. He also said that the governor is his own “worst enemy.”
The governor’s office told KTLA that Newsom is concentrating on the fires and organizing help for recovery, rather than on politics.
“Newsom’s office stated that it’s important to know that the same group of far-right Trump supporters has tried to recall the governor seven times since he took office, and each attempt has failed badly.”
Even leaders of the Republican Party have called these repeated attempts a blatant misuse of campaign funds. The people organizing the recall have been sued by some of their own donors for keeping money that was raised before. For example, they didn’t submit even one name in their last try.
To qualify for the statewide ballot, a recall petition must have legal signatures from 12% of the people who voted in the last governor’s election.
Saving California will hold a press meeting on Thursday morning to officially announce its recall efforts.
