According to a local humane group, a bookbag found on the side of the road near Youngstown, Ohio, contained around a dozen deceased puppies.
Around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, the group Animal Charity of Ohio said on Facebook that Youngstown police had dispatched its humane agents to the city’s northside in reference to the abandoned bookbag.
The humane society claims that 11 dead puppies were found within the bookbag.
“These puppies are tragically 11 more victims of the ongoing animal abuse and neglect in the city of Youngstown,” the nonprofit organization writes on its social media page.
“Traumatic and heartbreaking for our team.”
According to Jane MacMurchy, executive director of Animal Charity of Ohio, the bookbag was found on Monday afternoon by a person strolling close to downtown Youngstown.
According to MacMurchy, “the puppies were very young, maybe around 10 days old.”
The mixed-breed puppies were so young that their ears were not yet fully grown, according to the nonprofit’s humane agents.
The nonprofit organization informed the Cleveland, Ohio-based TV station that it was unable to provide information about the puppies’ cause of death or the length of time they might have been inside the bookbag that was left on the side of the road.
The group hopes that someone will identify the backpack and let them know who owns it because of the several patches that are affixed to its outside, making it unique.
For our crew, it’s both devastating and traumatic, MacMurchy stated.

Despite stating that the foundation has witnessed the highest increase in abandonment rates since COVID, MacMurchy described Monday’s circumstance as one she and her team had “never come across.”
“Unfortunately, we are still investigating this terrible situation,” she stated in her statement. “We are still asking for anyone with information about who could have done this to contact our organization.”
