A brother and sister who went missing in Ohio in October were found safe and sound in a village in Iceland this month.
On October 25, a family member told Canton, Ohio police that the two kids, ages 8 and 9, were missing. This is what the U.S. Marshals Service said in a statement.
The missing persons report says that the children, who have not been named, went missing after their mother stopped taking her medicine for mental health issues.
A statement says that the 34-year-old woman “abandoned” her flat and her kids stopped going to school.
The U.S. Marshals Service said investigators first found the children in Denver, Colorado. Later, they heard that the woman and her children had gone to London, England.
The police then found them on the island of Jersey, which is in the English Channel and more than 200 miles south of London. The woman is then said to have taken the kids to a fishing town in Iceland that is more than 2,500 miles away from Jersey.
The village’s name has not been made public, but the children were eventually found at a motel in Reykjavik, Iceland’s main city.
The children were safe when they were found, and they are now with Icelandic social services until they can be given to family members who can be trusted.
The mother is in the hospital and will be brought back to the U.S. when she is better. She might be charged, but it wasn’t clear right away.
