Police stated late Thursday that three teens had been arrested in connection with a shooting that killed someone on January 4 at an apartment in central Lubbock. The shooting happened after what seemed to be a drug deal turned into a robbery.
Lubbock police say that 17-year-old Julian Hernandez died after being shot several times during the fight that started at 4:38 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of 58th Street.
Investigators think Hernandez was in the process of getting drugs when someone broke into his car and stole his money. From what we know so far, Hernandez was shot while he was trying to get away from the car.
He was seriously hurt and taken by ambulance to University Medical Center, but he was declared dead later that same night.
Suspects were found
A probable cause document says that investigators talked to witnesses who said Amaya was the shooter.
The witness was a young person who told police that Amaya (who went by the street name “Shotta”) and another young person went to the apartment complex to sell Hernandez marijuana.
The document says that another witness said Amaya showed up at the apartment complex with a gun hidden under his clothes.
The person who saw what happened said that Hernandez, Amaya, and the child left. Soon after, there was a gunshot, and the witness found Hernandez with a gunshot wound.
The juvenile witness reportedly told police that Amaya and the other juvenile tried to rob Hernandez with a gun during the deal, and Amaya shot Hernandez when he tried to run away.
The affidavit says that forensic detectives found a 5.56 shell casing at the scene.
Investigators found the juvenile suspect’s social media account. On it, he had shared pictures of himself posing with a gun that fired the same type of bullet that was found at the scene.
The statement says that investigators think the gun that was used to kill Hernandez was stolen a few days before.
