Three members of the same family have not been seen since March 13, and it is possible that they were involved in a fatal crash involving many vehicles that occurred on westbound Interstate 40 during a winter storm.
Jiyeon Lee, 23, Taehee Kim, 69, and Junghee Kim, 64, were last seen on the highway heading west towards Las Vegas after leaving the Grand Canyon region, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office. Junghee Kim was 64 years old.
The Coconino Sheriff’s Office stated that they were travelling in a rented white 2024 BMW having the California number plate number 9KHN768, which was reported by the agency.
In a flyer that was made by the sheriff’s office, it is stated that the GPS system of the rental vehicle showed that it was travelling west at 3:27 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
This is the same time when a fatal accident involving multiple vehicles happened on westbound Interstate 40, as reported by ABC News.
It has been reported by the Arizona Department of Public Safety that a tractor-trailer jackknifed on the freeway and caught fire while totally blocking the westbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 159.5 near Williams, Arizona.
The drivers of multiple vehicles, including more tractor-trailers, failed to slow down or correctly use the brakes, which resulted in multiple vehicles colliding with other vehicles.
“Multiple passenger vehicles were rear-ended, pushing the into and in some cases underneath crashed tractor-trailers,” according to the Public Safety Department.
During the time that the accident took place, the highway was covered in snow and ice. The fire that originated from the tractor-trailer spread to numerous other cars and burned for twenty hours simultaneously.
Thirteen passenger vehicles were among the twenty-two vehicles that were involved in the collision, which resulted in a total of thirty-six persons being transported.
Two people were killed in the accident, and sixteen others were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
