BOCA RATON — According to city personnel records, the police officer who shot and killed someone last month has gotten several letters of praise and mostly good performance reviews since joining the Boca Raton police force in 2019.
Investigators say that Officer Michael Super killed 39-year-old Morey Clemmons on Dec. 18 during a fight downtown. He was put on critical incident leave because of this. The cops in Boca Raton haven’t said much about the incident, and they haven’t said what made Super fire his gun.
Tuesday, someone asked the city’s human resources department if Super was still on leave, but they didn’t answer right away.
FDLE is looking into a shooting involving a police officer in Boca Raton.
The shooting took place at the corner of Northwest Second Avenue and Northwest Second Street, which is north of City Hall and close to the Boca Raton Community Center.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is looking into it because Boca Raton cops asked them to. The police said their review will only look into Super’s use of force. It didn’t give any more details and said the probe is still ongoing.
The State Attorney’s Office for Palm Beach County will decide if the officer was properly allowed to do what they did. A representative for the office said that once the review is over, the office will put out a final report.
Since becoming a Boca Raton police officer, the officer had never used force before.
Police records given by the city did not show that Super had ever used force before. Records show that he did get a written warning for his part in a car accident in October 2023.
An internal review found that Super hit another car with his marked police car as he crossed lanes of traffic and tried to turn and enter a plaza. This led investigators to the conclusion that the crash could have been avoided.
Super graduated from Florida Atlantic University in 2016 and joined the police force in Boca Raton after working as a police officer in Cape Coral, Lee County, for two years. His personnel file shows that he was praised for, among other things, his work to save a person who was dying and for helping to find a runaway teen.
It is still unknown how Super and Clemmons met on the day of the killing, according to police.
A family member of Clemmons told WPTV NewsChannel 5 that Clemmons had been homeless for a few years. An online fundraiser said that Clemmons was good at cleaning and wanted to start his own business one day.
“Morey was a proud father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and son,” the donation page read. “He brought warmth to cold places, which was a gift that will never be forgotten.” It would be an insult to say he didn’t work hard. He did everything he could for his kids and was good at everything he tried.
