Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has urged local leaders to work with federal authorities to deport illegal immigrants who have criminal records or who are involved in criminal activity.
The comments made by the Democratic senator come at a time when there are ongoing discussions about immigration enforcement and the role that local governments play in helping federal attempts to remove those who are considered a threat to public safety.
Senator Fetterman made a statement in which he stressed the need to prioritize public safety while also showing sympathy for migrants who follow the law.
“I hope every local official would agree that anyone here—any migrants that are here with criminal backgrounds or engaging in criminal behavior—I think they should support [deportation],” Fetterman stated.
He contunued, “If ICE comes to round them up, I hope they would provide that kind of support.”
Fetterman’s statements show that he takes a practical approach to immigration enforcement, balancing the need for security with a commitment to shielding innocent people from unnecessary harm.
Fetterman expressed his opposition to forceful approaches that could terrify innocent individuals or disrupt communities while pushing for the deportation of criminal immigration.
‘I certainly would never support terrorizing otherwise innocent migrants in those kinds of situations, like kicking in a door at a school,” he stated. “But every migrant here with a criminal background or engaging in criminal behavior needs to go.”
Fetterman’s comments come at a time when the Trump administration is still focused on enforcing immigration laws, especially when it comes to deporting people who have criminal records.
The administration has regularly requested that local officials cooperate in these operations, often coming into conflict with so-called “sanctuary cities” that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Fetterman is trying to present himself as a reasonable voice in the Democratic Party by encouraging local politicians to support the deportation of criminal migrants.
He is doing this while also arguing for the compassionate treatment of migrants and prioritizing public safety.
