Some Schools in Missouri Would Have to Serve Food After the Bell Rings Because of a New Law

MISSOURI — Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, House Bill 285 would force some public and charter schools in Missouri to serve breakfast during the school day.

The bill says it applies to any public or charter school where at least 70% of the kids could get free or low-cost meals through the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program.

Schools that are required to serve breakfast can do so before or after first period. Students can also get food in the cafeteria and eat it whenever they want.

It would be required that “breakfast after the bell” be used starting with the 2025–2026 school year if the bill is passed.
