France’s lottery winner was bought with a stolen card, which was worth 500,000 euros ($523,000). But they disappeared before they could cash in, and now they are some of the most famous people on the run in France.
According to police records, the guy whose card was stolen is named Jean-David E. and he wants to split the money with the winners. So does he. He wants his cash back.
On the other hand, the crooks could be caught and jailed. La Française des Jeux, or FDJ, the state lottery company, said on Saturday that no one had turned in the ticket to cash it in.
“It’s a crazy story, but it’s all true,” Pierre Debuisson, Jean-David’s lawyer, told The Associated Press on Saturday.
The lawyer said that Jean-David found out earlier this month that someone had stolen his backpack from his car in the southern city of Toulouse. The backpack contained bank cards and other important papers. The card had already been used in a nearby store when Jean-David asked his bank to stop it.
A store owner told him that two guys who looked like they were homeless had used one of his cards to buy the winning scratch-off ticket.
Debuisson said, “They were so happy they forgot their cigarettes and their stuff and walked out like crazy people.”
While Jean-David did report the theft to the police, Debuisson said that he is ready to take it back if the thieves come forward so that they can share the money.
“No one would have won without them,” Jean-David said on France-2 for the public.
The lawyer said that prosecutors might try to take the winnings because they think they were gained illegally.
Thursday, the lawyer sent out a nationwide plea for the criminals to get in touch with his office and work out a deal.
He told her, “You don’t have to worry about anything; we’ll share with you.” “And your lives would be different.”
The ticket will finally run out, he said.
He told them, “Time is against us.”
