According to a message that was sent out to employees on Monday, CEO Brian Niccol indicated that Starbucks intends to fire off more than one thousand corporate employees.
According to Niccol, the layoffs will have an effect on 1,100 people working in the corporate offices of the chain, and they will do away with hundreds of positions that are currently vacant throughout the chain.
Despite the fact that baristas working at Starbucks’ local cafés will not be affected by the layoffs, Niccol stated that the company is developing a new model with “smaller, more nimble teams.”
Over the course of four consecutive quarters, competitors that provide products at lower prices have been eating away at Starbucks’ bottom line.
“I recognize the news is difficult,” Niccol said in his message to employees. “It is not a decision the leadership team took lightly. We understand the real effect this has on our partners’ lives and their families. We believe it’s a necessary change to position Starbucks for future success — and to ensure we deliver for our green apron partners and customers they serve.”
According to Niccol, individuals who are going to lose their positions will be informed by Tuesday at noon, while those who will be experiencing changes in their responsibilities will be informed by the end of the week.
“We’re committed to sharing the news with partners who are affected thoughtfully and with the respect they deserve,” Niccol stated. “We will also do everything we can to support those leaving.
