REPOST:  @theaidsmemorial — #RudolfNureyev (March 17, 1938 – January 6, 1993) was a dancer raised as the only son in a Tatar family in a village near Ufa, Bashkir in the former Soviet Union. . Nureyev tested HIV positive in 1984, but for many years denied that he was ill. His health began failing in the summer of 1991. In March 1992, he visited Kazan and appeared as a conductor at MusaCälil Tatar Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. Returning to Paris, he was admitted to hospital and was operated on for pericarditis. . Nureyev fought his illness so that he could fulfill an invitation to conduct at an @abtofficial benefit scheduled for May 6, 1992 at the @metopera in New York. He did so and was elated at the reception. . In July 1992, Nureyev showed renewed signs of pericarditis but determined to not to undergo further treatment. His last public appearance was on October 8, 1992, at the premiere of a new production that he choreographed for the @balletoperadeparis. . The French Culture Minister, Jack Lang, presented Nureyev that evening on stage with the Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Nureyev received a 10-minute standing ovation from the audience. He had to be helped onto the stage by two dancers, and remained seated as he was decorated. Though weak, tired and emaciated, Nureyev was very happy, and said, in English, "It's good to be alive." . Nureyev re-entered the hospital on November 20, 1992 and remained there until his death from cardiac complications. He was 54 years old. #whatisrememberedlives #theaidsmemorial #aidsmemorial #neverforget #endaids
Today is the 112th birthday of Cesar Romero.  There is a scene in "The Thin Man" where he (who's character is Chris Jorgensen, I guess foreign is foreign) is sitting in a chair while people are inquiring why he doesn't get a job, he stands up and storms away.  His much-older wife yells after him as one would a child throwing a temper tantrum.  That was his first movie and first scene.  I thought it was hilarious, possibly unintentionally so, but hilarious.  It took me quite a few years to merge in my head that that actor also was the actor that played The Joker on the 60's Batman TV series and various other guest roles on "The Love Boat" and so forth.  His career spanned more than 60 years, with continued relevance and popularity today.  The world is a better place because he was in it and still feels the loss that he has left. #CesarRomero #TheThinMan #Batman @grrrrantula @SenorScraps #PicOfTheDay #rebel #dailyinspiration #Legend #WordsToLiveBy
Today on Waldina, I am celebrating the 117th birthday of Thelma Ritter. She wasn't in a movie until she was 45 years old (and then it was "Miracle on 34th Street"), and is proof that there second acts in American lives and that it is never too late to start anything. She is one of the actors that will make me want to watch the movie if she is in it, no matter how small. She perfected the working class voice of reason character that kept all the other characters from getting too out of touch. And if they did, she had no problem telling them so. Watch her in "Rear Window" and "The Misfits" and you will want to add every movie she is in to your Netflix queue. The world is a better place because she was in it and still feels the loss that she has left. #ThelmaRitter #AllAboutEve #RearWindow @grrrrantula @SenorScraps #PicOfTheDay #rebel #dailyinspiration #Legend #WordsToLiveBy
