NEW YORK — The IRS is telling owners that the tax deadline for some small businesses that were hurt by bad weather in 2024 is coming up soon.
Because of natural disasters, small companies in 14 states and two territories got extra time to file their 2023 taxes. They will now have to do so in 2025. Some have a date of February 3 depending on where they are. For some, May 1 is the day.
If a natural disaster like an earthquake or severe weather like hurricanes and tornadoes is declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the IRS gives tax extensions to small businesses and other people who have been impacted. People who are in certain areas get extra time naturally.
The early date is February 3. This includes people who live in Louisiana, Vermont, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and parts of Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington.
The due date for all 2023 tax returns is May 1, 2023. This includes people in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. For these people, May 1 is also the last day to file their 2024 tax returns and pay any taxes that are owed.
You have a different due date if you live or work in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank, or Gaza, or if you were touched by the terrorist attacks in Israel. They have until September 30 to pay and file. This includes all of the results for 2023 and 2024.
