Teacher Finds Evidence of Abuse: 5-Year-Old Burned with Cigarette, and It’s Not the First Time

After allegedly punishing her 5-year-old kid for the second time by burning him with a lighted cigarette, a 32-year-old Georgia woman was taken into custody.

According to documents, Tisheika N. Washington was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of first-degree cruelty to minors in connection with the alleged incident.

Deputies were called to Richmond Hill Elementary School on Thursday in response to a report of suspected child abuse, according to an incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, which was published by Augusta CBS station WRDW.

Deputies spoke with a teacher when they arrived at the site, and she told them that one of her students had been complaining of back pain.

The youngster allegedly admitted to the teacher that he had been burned when questioned.

The teacher then discovered what looked to be a fresh, round wound on the child’s back when she raised up his shirt.

According to The Augusta Press, deputies stated in the report that “[the victim] told her that his mother, Tisheika Washington, had burned him with a lit cigarette as punishment for his behavior.”

The instructor also informed deputies that she had previously reported Washington to the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) for allegedly assaulting her kid after the boy informed her that his mother had inserted the lit end of a cigarette into his left temple.

According to authorities, the sheriff’s office had not been notified of the child’s temple’s purported fire.

Deputies reportedly noticed a circular scar on the boy’s left temple that “looked like the end of a cigarette” when they examined his face more closely, the Press reported.

According to reports, deputies also saw that the boy’s new back wound and the wound on his temple seemed to be the same size and shape.

Furthermore, the school nurse stated that she thought the boy’s back wound was in “multiple stages of healing” and that she had experience caring for patients who had experienced burn trauma.

“This could be caused by multiple injuries occurring in the same spot over time,” according to the incident report.

According to documents, Washington was apprehended at her residence on Nordahl Drive, placed under arrest, and taken to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center for processing.

As of Monday afternoon, she was still there. It was unclear at first if she had hired legal counsel or if a bond had been established.
