Two teenagers in Texas were arrested for reportedly asking two elementary school kids if they wanted to be kidnapped as part of a popular TikTok prank, according to the police.
Kaine Villarreal, 19, and Lane Burch, 18, who live in Kyle, Texas, were arrested last Wednesday for making terroristic threats. The pair reportedly asked two kids, ages 7 and 9, going home from school if they wanted to be kidnapped.
The scary comments scared the kids, so they quickly called their parents to tell them about the weird experience.
The parents called the Kyle Police Department, and the teens were arrested.
Villarreal and Burch both tried to defend themselves by saying that they were just playing out a TikTok prank that they had seen, according to police.
Kyle PD Public Information Specialist Ashlee Bradshaw told local news that two teenagers attempted a trick near the school where the two kids go.
Bradshaw said, “Pranks that can harm people or damage property are against the law.”
The Hays Consolidated Independent School District released a letter to the parents of Negley Elementary School. District Chief Communication Officer Tim Savoy praised the children for their quick thought and urged parents to talk to their kids about staying alert in public.
“We’re happy that the students are safe and proud of them for telling their parents right away.” Savoy wrote to keep reminding your children about the dangers of strangers.
TikTok scams often make news because they are crazy.
In 2023, a popular trick got some people in London arrested for trespassing. Some people were trying to break into random homes as a joke to see if they could get inside.
Another popular trend from 2022 that still crops up every so often saw strangers dressing up as mannequins at Target to see if they could fit in with the model dolls and scare unwitting customers.
