Three People on a Boat at Saguaro Lake Are Thought to Have Died From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says that three people were found dead on a boat at Saguaro Lake on Saturday. They were likely poisoned by carbon monoxide.

About 3 p.m., deputies went to the Saguaro Lake Marina, which is about 50 minutes east of Phoenix. There, they found the bodies of three people who have not been identified on a boat, Sgt. Calbert Gillett said in a written statement.

“Appeared to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning,” Gillett said of the victims, who were only named as one adult man and two adult women.

The Sheriff’s Office wouldn’t say anything else about the deaths, like the names or ages of the victims, because officers were still looking into them.

As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say, dangerous amounts of carbon monoxide can build up from generators that run on gasoline. These generators are often found on larger boats like houseboats.

Carbon monoxide is a gas that has no color or smell and can kill anyone who breathes it in.
