In Texas, an elementary school student, age eight, lost her life tragically after her coat became lodged in a car door while she was being dropped off at school.
Serenity Campos was getting out of the automobile to start her school day at Gateway Elementary School in Borger, Texas, when she was hit by the moving car, causing her to suffer fatal injuries.
The small girl’s injuries proved deadly despite the prompt actions of first responders and a school teacher. The incident happened at approximately 8 a.m. on Friday.
The incident happened very fast, and even though a senior school teacher tried to step in and save the youngster, it was too late to stop the catastrophe, according to the Borger Police Department.
“According to multiple witness accounts, Serenity exited a vehicle in the designated student drop-off area of the Gateway Elementary parking lot. Her coat became caught in the vehicle’s door without the driver’s knowledge. As the vehicle began to pull away, the motion caused Serenity to fall and be struck by the vehicle,” police stated.
The young girl was taken to Golden Plains Community Hospital for immediate medical attention after the school administration and emergency workers on the site made a concerted effort to save her life.
Regretfully, Serenity passed away from her wounds not long after she got to the hospital.
The Borger Independent School District acted quickly to protect the other children’ safety and wellbeing following the horrific event.
The district told parents that staff would stay on the scene until all students were safely picked up, and two hours after the accident, they were instructed to pick up their children at a specific area of the school.
The school said in the evening that all students, employees, and families impacted by the tragic incident would have access to counseling services.

The entire community has been profoundly affected by Serenity Campos’ passing. “Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss,” the Borger Police Department said in a statement outlining their sympathies.
“The entire community grieves alongside them. At this time, we ask for understanding, patience, and compassion for all those affected. Please join us in keeping the family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
The school community, friends, and Serenity’s family have all suffered greatly emotionally, and many have banded together to help them through this trying time.
By Monday night, a GoFundMe page created for Serenity’s family had raised over $76,000, demonstrating the tremendous amount of love from both the local and global community.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic loss of Serenity Campos, a beautiful little girl who passed away unexpectedly this morning. Daniela and Daniel Campos, her loving parents, are now faced with the unimaginable grief of losing their daughter while also caring for their three other children,” it read.
Walmart also gave 40 stuffed animals as a token of condolence, and they were positioned in a monument in front of Gateway Elementary School in memory of Serenity.
Many people who are grieving the loss of a life stolen too soon have visited the memorial, which has turned into a place of remembering for the young girl.
