Two Servicemembers Arrested for Allegedly Tossing Metal Railing Over Haiku Stairs

HONOLULU — Honolulu police have arrested two sailors from the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for trespassing and stealing at Haiku Stairs.

The two were reportedly seen tossing a metal railing off the stairs.

HPD said that the two were part of a bigger group illegally hiking on the trail, and they plan to arrest more people.

Officials from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were informed right away and are working to help the two 2nd Class Petty Officers involved.

HPD thanked the public, Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service for their help in a social media post.

PHNSY & IMF stated that the commanding officer can punish service members according to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. This can range from a written warning to being discharged from the military.

“PHNSY & IMF really cares about Hawaii’s environment and is dedicated to being open about how we operate and the actions of our 6,500 employees, including both Sailors and civilians.” The videos and pictures showing people trespassing at Haʻikū Stairs do not reflect the core values of Honor, Courage, Commitment, and Aloha, according to a statement from PHNSY & IMF.

Honolulu police gave an update just before 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 announcing that four more adults and one juvenile turned themselves in at Kailua Police Station.

They were caught for entering a place without permission.

Officials want to remember everyone that it’s illegal for people without permission to access Haiku Stairs. Anyone caught hiking there without authorization may be ticketed or arrested.

“No trespassing” signs were put up. “Don’t put your safety or the safety of others at risk,” HPD said.
