After both of their vehicles were incorrectly tagged with suspended plates (months apart and with no clear explanation), a couple from Reno is encouraging other drivers to check their vehicle registrations. The pair’s autos were reported to have been suspended.
“People should look into this because it can be a very expensive mistake,” said Cindy Waxman, who, along with her husband Tom, recently found herself dealing with a perplexing mix-up at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that resulted in both of their vehicles having surrendered plates.
Tom Waxman was the first person to discover the problem in October, when a colleague brought to his attention the fact that his registration had had a time limit on it.
When he went to the Department of Motor Vehicles to look into the matter, he was taken aback by the information that he discovered.
“I told them I didn’t surrender my plates,” Tom stated. “She asked if I was sure they weren’t stolen or something. I went to the parking lot, took a picture of the front and back of my plates, and the DMV employee said, ‘Oh, it must’ve been a clerical error.'”
Tom was compelled to hand over his original plates and acquire new ones, despite the fact that the mistake had been made.
After that, Cindy experienced the same problem two months after it had occurred.
“I was like, ‘Lightning has hit twice. I can’t believe this!'” Cindy stated. “And my name is not on his vehicle, his name is not on mine. So it’s two different vehicles from two different accounts.”
Cindy resorted to Reddit to share her story after she had direct experience with the issue. It was then that she rapidly discovered that she and her husband were not the only ones who would be harmed by the blunder.
“I’m just wondering how many people did get pulled over for surrendered plates and got fined,” Tom stated.

Although Tom and Cindy were able to avoid receiving fines, it is possible that other drivers in Nevada will not be as fortunate.
In the state, violators who are pulled over with suspended license plates face penalties that can range from $500 to $1,000, and in extreme instances, they may even be sentenced to jail time.
“I was told this has happened quite a lot in the last year,” Cindy stated. “They’re not sure if it’s a glitch in the system, clerical errors, improper training, but there are any number of scenarios that could’ve caused this.”

The pair is now asking other people to check the registrations of their vehicles in order to prevent the possibility of receiving fines.
It is their hope that the Department of Motor Vehicles would fix the issue as more drivers report similar problems, so that fewer drivers who are unaware of the issue may find themselves in a scenario that is expensive.
