An inebriated suspect started stabbing people on the street, including himself, at random on Thursday, leaving at least six victims hurt in the nation’s capital.
The incident was reported Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:22 p.m. in the Trinidad area of Washington, D.C. When authorities from the Metropolitan Police Department got there, they discovered “numerous people suffering from stab wounds.”
At a press conference, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith informed reporters that the suspect was “in an altered mental state from an unknown substance.”
“While walking down the street, the individual began stabbing himself, and then he stabbed a female acquaintance who was also with him,” Smith stated.
“Four women and two men were transported to area hospitals as a result of a senseless assault.”
As of Thursday night, the condition of every victim is stable. Good Samaritans attempted to save others from the assailant in two of them.
“I will say this, even though we’re grateful for their intervention, we would ask that individuals who see incidents such as this to not intervene, because these two individuals, although good Samaritans, were also stabbed as part of this assault,” Smith noted.
“The grandmother and her granddaughters were getting in a car, primarily minding their own business, doing whatever they were doing,” Smith stated.
Crime has historically been a problem in Washington, D.C. A man was hospitalized in January after defending his girlfriend, age 21, during a near-fatal carjacking in Northwest Washington, D.C.
Three D.C. girls were detained and charged in October 2023 for the murder of a 64-year-old man in Northwest D.C. Reggie Brown, the victim, was fatally beaten.
The event is being looked into by authorities. At this point, no other details are known.
