The Republican governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, has threatened to stop providing local governments with state funds if they do not assist federal immigration enforcement.
The idea coincides with the governor’s efforts to eradicate the Commonwealth’s “sanctuary cities,” which are localities that choose to shield undocumented immigrants rather to work with federal law enforcement to enforce immigration laws.
The concept of withholding financing was first proposed by Youngkin in December.
It has now been suggested by the governor as a change to the state budget that the General Assembly approved.
According to the outlet, the idea would guarantee that state funds do not end up in counties or cities that have “sanctuary city” laws, including as refusing Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s requests for detainers.
Fairfax and other Democrat-run counties in northern Virginia have come under special fire from the governor.
According to him, in order to keep getting financing, immigration enforcement must work together fully.
“This is not a decision for people to make locally,” he stated. “This is for the betterment of all our safety. We are not a sanctuary state and therefore we’re not supporting localities that are declared sanctuary cities.”
Jeff Mckay, the chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, told that Youngkin’s plan would essentially “defund the police,” arguing that officials in Fairfax County do not function as a “sanctuary city” and that they adhere to all legal detainers.
“Ultimately, what he’s saying is, if you don’t agree with his non-lawyer definition of ‘sanctuary city,’ it could affect your law enforcement agency, and he’s doing this because he’s alleging significant crime is occurring,” McKay stated.

The governor has been accused by Democrat Don Scott, the speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, of “capitulating” to the Trump administration, which has attempted to implement the president’s intention to deport large numbers of migrants.
Next week, the Democrat-controlled General Assembly will consider the governor’s proposal.
