Volunteers Clear 10,400 Bags of Litter from Arizona Highways in 2024

PHOENIX – Last year, volunteers in Arizona’s Adopt a Highway program worked almost 18,000 hours to help keep the roads clean, according to state transportation officials.

According to ADOT, their effort to collect 10,400 bags of litter saved taxpayers $538,000.

Last year, 7,686 people took part in Adopt Highway cleanups, representing 871 volunteer groups that look after highway miles, mostly in places outside of Arizona’s cities.

Groups agree to clean up litter in their chosen area at least once a year. They work with ADOT to get safety gear, litter bags, and training for cleanup events, and then they share the results, according to officials.

Every chosen area has a sign with the name of the Adopt a Highway group.
