Walmart Broccoli Recall Now at Critical Risk Level, FDA Issues Life-Threatening Warning

Due to the possibility of contamination, a Class I recall has been issued for broccoli florets sold at Walmart, which is the highest threat level.

Consumers are being advised to throw away the affected food products.

Since December 27, Braga Fresh has been recalling certain containers of their 12oz Marketside Broccoli Florets that are ready to eat.

On December 31, the FDA announced the recall and has since changed its classification.

Class I recalls are the most dangerous type of food recall issued by the FDA.

They are defined as “situation[s] in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The recall is solely relevant to 12oz packs of Marketside Broccoli Florets that were sold at Walmart.

The products that are being recalled have a “6 81131 32884 5” UPC code on the back of the bag and a best-by date of December 10, 2024. The products likewise have a lot code of “BFFG327A6.”

“All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and no longer for sale,” according to the Braga Foods statement. “This voluntary advisory does not apply to any other Marketside or Braga Fresh produced products.”

“This product is past its [best-by date] and is no longer in stores, but consumers may have frozen the item for later use,” the release added. “Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not consume and discard the product.”

The announcement says that the recall was started “due to the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.”

“The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” according to the statement.

The Walmart stores that received the merchandise that may have been affected are in the states of Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Even though there have been no recorded cases of illness related to the items, Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, which is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, older adults, and persons with weakened immune systems.

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA stated.

Walmart stated that the health and safety of its consumers is “always a top priority.”

“While the expiration date for the potentially impacted Marketside Broccoli Florets has past and the product is no longer in stores, we encourage customers who may still have this product in their homes, such as stored in freezers, to not consume and to discard the product,” according to the spokesperson. “At this time, there have been no reported illnesses associated with this advisory, and we are working with the supplier to investigate.”
