Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office Member Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle on Illinois Highway

A deputy sheriff from western Wisconsin is said to have died after being hit by a car while walking along an Illinois highway.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office says that a Grant County Correctional Officer (Jailer) died on February 8 after being hit by a car. Police say Dylan Bellamy was walking on the highway close to Mattoon, Illinois.

It is said that Bellamy joined the Grant County Sheriff’s Office in December 2023. He was also in the Army National Guard. It says in the report that he was in Illinois for a training weekend with his unit.

Authorities say that they are still looking into what happened. It wasn’t clear if the driver was jailed or given a ticket.

The Grant County Sheriff said Bellamy would do very well as a deputy sheriff.
